Fall is a wonderful season for people and their canine companions.  Cooler weather means a resurgence in energy.  Many hunting dogs sense the change and are excited for their favorite activity.  However many hunting dogs are not in good condition for 15 mile days in the field.  Sudden exercise and overwork in the field will result in extremely sore painful limbs and muscles accompanied by severe abrasions to the feet and pads.  Gradual increase in exercise plus consistent field work will make the hunting season far more successful for dogs.

Winter arrives and many people change oil and antifreeze in their cars.  Antifreeze is tasty and toxic and one of the most common sources of poisoning for companion animals.  In general always watch for loose chemicals.  Make sure caps are on tightly.

All animals need a thick coat for winter unless they are primarily indoors.  Fall is a particularly good time for daily brushing.  Brushing removes the dead hair and allows a thicker warmer coat to grow.  Conditioning a dog to the snow and ice prevents frostbite.  Dogs kept outside in winter should have a shelter to stay out of wind and snow.
